In 2003, I attended a creative writing course given by Mary Schramski. One of her homework assignments was: "Describe what you want to do with your writing." Below is my answer.

Written: March 2003
Estimated reading time: 1 minute

Describe What You Want To Do With Your Writing

My dog is a better person that I am. She loves to meet people, and when you pat her head, she pee's on your foot.
When she yanked me off the walking trail in Bear Creek Park, I wasn't surprised. She dragged me to a woman lying on a beach towel, reading a novel.
"I'm sorry!" I said, apologizing for my dog's kiss attack.
My smile melted. "Are you all right?"
She nodded, sniffled, and wiped a tear from her cheek then scratched my dog behind the ears.
My dog catches all the breaks. With her lemon yellow beach towel, I couldn't tell if my dog christened it or not.
"What's her name?" she asked and stuck out her tongue, meeting my dogs'.
"Bumper."
"Odd name."
I shrugged. "She fits my personality. I'm a rewriter. I used to be a writer, but I do far too much editing. Are you sure you're all right?"
"I've been reading this." She held up a book then used it to shield her eyes from the sun. "I must have read it a gazillion times. The heroine commits suicide." She reached up to wipe away another tear, but Bumper finished the job. "Later we discover that she faked it. The ending is beautiful, almost poetic." She clasped the book to her breast, arms folded, eyes closed, rocking from side to side like waves of grain in a field of breezes. "I'd love to meet the author."
I stuck out my hand.
